Independence Day 2023: Resist Tyranny

In the winter of 1776, British victory appeared imminent. The rebellion was to be crushed. The Continental Army was shrinking due to desertions, casualties, and expired enlistments. Supplies were low. Morale was even lower. 

Washington knew something had to happen. Something unexpected. Something to rally American spirits to once again push back the dominant British Empire.

The Battle of Trenton, which required a dangerous Delaware crossing and days of planning, became that rally. In fact, this moment would be immortalized as the Delaware River Crossing for future generations to remember.

But what was it for?

Five months prior, the colonies’ representatives had signed a document that elaborated on the reasons. Ultimately, this resistance rested on the principle that governments exist to protect God-given rights, and,

“That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

Augustine defined liberty as the ability to do what is good. Government exists to protect life and liberty. When it imposes unjust burdens on the people, it becomes criminal, at least with regard to its encroachment.

When government becomes criminal, it is the right of the people to change that. But Free Men need tools of change. Tools of Liberty.

A rifle is the first Tool of Liberty. The government enforces its laws via force or the threat of force. The people ought to uphold liberty in the same fashion.

Body armor is the second Tool of Liberty. It keeps you in the fight. When you’re outnumbered—and those who resist tyranny often are—this is especially valuable to the cause. Body armor is principally for the resistance of tyrants.

One of the greatest quotes from America’s early days is this:

“The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops.”

Is this true of modern America? We ought to make it so.
