The armor carriers a 5-year shelf life, and the model designation of 2019 will help you identify which model you have, and when you should replace your backpack.
The Trauma Pad Option:
Soft body armor is designed to ‘catch’ the bullet, spreading its energy over an increasingly larger portion of the ballistic vest as the projectile tries to pass through. But the vests (and user) still absorb the bullet’s kinetic energy, which can injure the user via bluntforce trauma. Even with a hard armor plate, there will be transmitted impact energy.
AR500 Armor® Trauma Pads are designed to decrease the blunt force energy felt upon impact when worn behind body armor. Our trauma pads feature non-Newtonian layers which instantly harden upon impact, creating a larger rigid surface area decreasing energy transfer and increasing absorption throughout the trauma pad.
When you choose to add a trauma pad, we will hand sew the trauma pad properly in place within The Phoenix Armored Backpack, no work installation is required.
The IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) Option:
Our IFAKs (Individual First Aid Kits) are specifically designed for gunshot and stab wounds. Each IFAK is complete with the tools necessary to stop severe bleeding wounds, and makes and excellent, affordable, and very capable additional your backpack. They are lightweight, and compact. You’ll have plenty of room left over for other necessaries.

- No bottle pocket Review by JT
I have a regular pack with both and I use the combo to secure a handheld radio and an 18” antenna when I ride my motorcycle. Maybe on the 3.0?
Otherwise, I really like them. (Posted on 2/10/2020)
- Quality Look, but some room for improvements Review by Todd
This review is focused on my first impressions of the pack function and cosmetics as a backpack. These may be considered by the engineers with future versions. My opinions are independent. I purchased these items and it is unsolicited. I am 6'3 and am a big guy, I have spent a lot of time carrying packs and so my review of this product is from this perspective.
First, is related to marketing. I understand it, I do it, so I know its importance, but it is my opinion that having a stealth armor pack with a tag on it that says "I am an armor backpack", may not be the brightest of ideas. This silver tag in fact makes the pack itself a more valuable target. This was the first thing to get removed when I got my products. The patch inside the main compartment will survive my alterations, but using a common marketing method for a stealth product may need to be rethought. Maybe a stealth patch, but you already sold me, advertising a product like this is not something I prefer to do. In a situation where I use it as a shield the patch would just tell the aggressor to aim low.
Next thing I noted was the quality of the material used for the construction. I like the rugged feel to the material used, it is stiff and not soft or thin. I think this makes the pack feel like a quality and long lasting pack. Something not yet put to the test is the stitching used in the pack. This will be tested in the coming months and I am curious how long the pack straps hold up.
The cheapest feel for this product are the arm straps. They are narrow and feel like cheap attachment to the quality pack. I did some experimenting and if you tried to use them to hold the back in front of you or wear it backwards, these straps do not seem to be very useful. They definitely do not portray the quality exhibited in the rest of the pack and this would be my most critical observation. Holding this pack as any type of shield seems clumsy and the loop across the top is not useful. Maybe a set of loops in the pack that allow it to be held like a shield, if that is the desired use.
The pocket on the front is large and provides a good amount of space. I would be interested in a design where that pocket may be a pull away pocket or quick draw with Velcro with a hook and loop interior allowing for the carrier to get easy access to the contents of that pocket.
Zippers seem to be quality and heavy duty, time and testing will tell, but the drawstrings attached to the zippers make it look and feel cheaper than the backpack quality deserves. This may be personal preference, but these feel like plastic and prefer cord to strips which may be hard to grasp when wet and seem like they will easily come apart over time. I will probably replace with parachute cord.
The weight is about expected, but unless you are used to carrying around a lot of weight in a pack, it is already about the weight of a pack with a 15' laptop in the pack. This takes me back to the importance of the arm straps. The arm straps don't provide much width to help distribute the weight. Again once weight is applied the backpack straps will likely chew into your shoulders over time, so what you plan on carrying around may limit your desire to carry it through an airport or on a day to day urban adventure.
Summary: I really like the pack!! Given I am....me. I see some things I may have done differently to make it a 5 star product. (Posted on 1/22/2020)
- JaneSport has better Zippers Review by MJL Verified Purchase
AR500, guys I love my plate carrier from you, but these zippers on your Phoenix aren’t going to last long at all. The size of pack pack is good, material and stitching is good but these zippers aren’t up to speed! Also if you compare the shoulder straps to a JaneSport backpack the JaneSport back pack straps are better quality!
Beef up the zippers and shoulder straps please! (Posted on 11/25/2019)
