The Phoenix is something you take with you everywhere. It affords you protection which could save your life. With 7 years in body armor and plate carrier manufacturing designed for heavy duty use, we’ve taken our industry knowledge and applied it towards lightweight and flexible backpack armor development and backpack design. The result is the most reliable and affordable one-piece armored backpack available today, with the AR500 Armor® quality you expect. Each design aspect is engineered with protection, ease of use, and concealability in mind.

The armor is first manufactured 100% in our Phoenix, AZ facility. Cut, assembled, and sealed by our team of craftsmen. We utilize an Anti-Microbial and Water-resistant rip-stop laminate which is both protective and lightweight. This special IIIA armored panel is inserted into The Phoenix, completely sealed again in the ideal location for optimal vital coverage within the backpack. You never have to worry about fitting a specific size within your backpack, or your panel shifting out of position. As it leaves our factory, your backpack is immediately ready for use, full featured, with zero encumberments. You might even forget you have body armor with you.

The perfect travel companion. Wear The Phoenix front facing, back facing, slung over one shoulder, hang it over your seat, or use the straps and carry handle to deploy as a shield. Also, ideal for flying to use as a travel or carry on backpack.

The Backpack features durable zippers, padded rear backing for comfort, and padded fully adjustable backpack straps. The Hypalon bottom lining is both high traction, abrasion and water resistant. On each zipper, you’ll find the same high traction Hypalon pull tabs.

We recommend wearing the backpack as high up on your back as comfortably possible for adequate vital coverage.

The generously sized primary compartment features a laptop sleeve, compatible with nearly all laptops The Front pocket is large and includes a key lanyard with hook, and retention pockets for pens and other accessories. The flat front facing pocket is low profile and will easily accommodate a full-sized pistol for concealment. Complete with subdued AR500 Armor® Phoenix Branding.

Large Main Pocket size: 18” x 13” x 9" (with laptop sleeve)

Medium Front pocket size: 10” x 10”

Total Weight with Backpack + 10x12” Armor: 13lbs

Available in two sizes to match your budget. 10” x 12”, or 11” x 15”. Regardless of size, we appropriate the armor in it’s ideal ride height for maximum vital protection. Reference this video for ideal armor placement and vital coverage: If it’s within your budget we recommend the largest armor option can afford in backpack use, as they deploy excellent as shields.

The armor carriers a 5-year shelf life, and the model designation of 2019 will help you identify which model you have, and when you should replace your backpack.

The Trauma Pad Option:

Soft body armor is designed to ‘catch’ the bullet, spreading its energy over an increasingly larger portion of the ballistic vest as the projectile tries to pass through. But the vests (and user) still absorb the bullet’s kinetic energy, which can injure the user via bluntforce trauma. Even with a hard armor plate, there will be transmitted impact energy.

AR500 Armor® Trauma Pads are designed to decrease the blunt force energy felt upon impact when worn behind body armor. Our trauma pads feature non-Newtonian layers which instantly harden upon impact, creating a larger rigid surface area decreasing energy transfer and increasing absorption throughout the trauma pad.

When you choose to add a trauma pad, we will hand sew the trauma pad properly in place within The Phoenix Armored Backpack, no work installation is required.

The IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) Option:

Our IFAKs (Individual First Aid Kits) are specifically designed for gunshot and stab wounds. Each IFAK is complete with the tools necessary to stop severe bleeding wounds, and makes and excellent, affordable, and very capable additional your backpack. They are lightweight, and compact. You’ll have plenty of room left over for other necessaries.

BOGO sale made it worth it But... Review by George
I agree with comments made by others about the zipper quality and I was expecting something better then a generic quality bag. That being said the BOGO made it a value as you essentially get the bag for free if you paid for a stand alone plate. It would be better if there was a way to adapt the bag to being to add additional features after purchase. For example if you decided later to add a trauma pad? Could you? The answer is no. The video gives the impression it can be used as a tactical shield. I would suggest not as easily done and there are no handles or fast and ways to simply do this. So as a BOGO? Okay price but as a stand alone? I don't know. I purchased the upgraded III+ LW larger plate and used the inner pouch and put my soft armor plate in it. (Posted on 4/23/2020)
Great daily covert option Review by Nathan
This packpack reminds me a little of my old Jansen backpack from elementary school...but made better!! Shoulder straps are surprisingly comfortable for supporting my laptop, lunch and a backup weapon system. The construction is solid, and the small AR500 logo provides for a covert image. Would like an attachment point for holsters or securing a weapon system without ordering additional products. Perhaps offer an option to add a foam securement system?
Thank you for your kind words, as well as the product suggestion. We're striving to make a pack that is useful to the widest audience, while still maintaining affordability, but always welcome product enhancement suggestions. Thank you again.

No bottle pocket Review by JT
Great quality. Got the BOGO, so awesome price. It has an inconspicuous look. I just wish it had a side pocket (or 2) for a water bottle or a spot to clip a carabiner to hang a bottle off the side.
I have a regular pack with both and I use the combo to secure a handheld radio and an 18” antenna when I ride my motorcycle. Maybe on the 3.0?
Otherwise, I really like them. (Posted on 2/10/2020)
Quality Look, but some room for improvements Review by Todd
I spent some time looking at this product and was so impressed with the videos that I ordered two of them. This review is not around a functional test. I will trust AR500 on those points, if they are wrong...well then I probably will not have an opinion about anything anyway.
This review is focused on my first impressions of the pack function and cosmetics as a backpack. These may be considered by the engineers with future versions. My opinions are independent. I purchased these items and it is unsolicited. I am 6'3 and am a big guy, I have spent a lot of time carrying packs and so my review of this product is from this perspective.
First, is related to marketing. I understand it, I do it, so I know its importance, but it is my opinion that having a stealth armor pack with a tag on it that says "I am an armor backpack", may not be the brightest of ideas. This silver tag in fact makes the pack itself a more valuable target. This was the first thing to get removed when I got my products. The patch inside the main compartment will survive my alterations, but using a common marketing method for a stealth product may need to be rethought. Maybe a stealth patch, but you already sold me, advertising a product like this is not something I prefer to do. In a situation where I use it as a shield the patch would just tell the aggressor to aim low.
Next thing I noted was the quality of the material used for the construction. I like the rugged feel to the material used, it is stiff and not soft or thin. I think this makes the pack feel like a quality and long lasting pack. Something not yet put to the test is the stitching used in the pack. This will be tested in the coming months and I am curious how long the pack straps hold up.
The cheapest feel for this product are the arm straps. They are narrow and feel like cheap attachment to the quality pack. I did some experimenting and if you tried to use them to hold the back in front of you or wear it backwards, these straps do not seem to be very useful. They definitely do not portray the quality exhibited in the rest of the pack and this would be my most critical observation. Holding this pack as any type of shield seems clumsy and the loop across the top is not useful. Maybe a set of loops in the pack that allow it to be held like a shield, if that is the desired use.
The pocket on the front is large and provides a good amount of space. I would be interested in a design where that pocket may be a pull away pocket or quick draw with Velcro with a hook and loop interior allowing for the carrier to get easy access to the contents of that pocket.
Zippers seem to be quality and heavy duty, time and testing will tell, but the drawstrings attached to the zippers make it look and feel cheaper than the backpack quality deserves. This may be personal preference, but these feel like plastic and prefer cord to strips which may be hard to grasp when wet and seem like they will easily come apart over time. I will probably replace with parachute cord.
The weight is about expected, but unless you are used to carrying around a lot of weight in a pack, it is already about the weight of a pack with a 15' laptop in the pack. This takes me back to the importance of the arm straps. The arm straps don't provide much width to help distribute the weight. Again once weight is applied the backpack straps will likely chew into your shoulders over time, so what you plan on carrying around may limit your desire to carry it through an airport or on a day to day urban adventure.
Summary: I really like the pack!! Given I I see some things I may have done differently to make it a 5 star product. (Posted on 1/22/2020)
JaneSport has better Zippers Review by MJL Verified Purchase
I wanted a low profile backpack with soft armor integrated into the backpack for protection when traveling. The material is strong with good stitching. The 11x15 soft armor is sowed in well. The size of backpack fits my needs. However the zippers are not going to last! Let’s just say a JaneSport backpack from Walmart has about the same if not better zipper quality.

AR500, guys I love my plate carrier from you, but these zippers on your Phoenix aren’t going to last long at all. The size of pack pack is good, material and stitching is good but these zippers aren’t up to speed! Also if you compare the shoulder straps to a JaneSport backpack the JaneSport back pack straps are better quality!

Beef up the zippers and shoulder straps please! (Posted on 11/25/2019)
