Rhyolite Soft Armor vs. Taurus Judge: 410 Defender Shells at 2 Feet

Overview

Daniel from AR500 Armor® puts the 10” x 12” Rhyolite Soft Armor to the test against a formidable threat: the Taurus Judge loaded with .410 Defender shells. This test simulates an extreme close-quarters defensive encounter, with shots fired from just two feet away.

Test Setup

Armor Tested: AR500 Armor® Rhyolite Soft Armor (10” x 12”)

Firearm: Taurus Judge

Ammunition: 410 Defender shells (three rounds total)

Distance: 2 feet

Preparation: Back label removed to avoid sticking to the ballistic material during inspection

Test Results

Daniel loaded the Taurus Judge with three .410 Defender shells and fired at the Rhyolite Soft Armor panel from just two feet.

Findings

  • All three rounds were completely contained
  • No penetration into the back side of the armor
  • Minimal deformation, with ballistic layers maintaining integrity

Conclusion

The Rhyolite Soft Armor proved to be a reliable and affordable option for handgun and close-range shotgun pistol threats. Stopping three .410 Defender shells at near point-blank range is a strong testament to its capability in high-stress, close-quarters scenarios.

As Daniel says: “You be the judge.” Next, we’ll be testing this armor against other common handgun calibers, including 9mm and .45 ACP, to further demonstrate its versatility.
