AR500 Armor got its start in the Founder’s garage and backyard. Tyler was selling carriers, but people kept asking him if he had armor to sell. Everything on the market was expensive, and most companies were unwilling to even sell to civilians. Tyler believed in the right of the individual own body armor. He wanted to find a reliable body armor solution that any American could afford to buy.
Tyler found that Steel was becoming more and more effective as new types of hard steel were becoming available. Our founder experimented with materials, tinkered with formulations, testing the combinations and hit repeat – He kept working on different applications of steel and coatings until he arrived at a working piece of body armor that could perform at NIJ Level III capabilities while also capturing fragmentation and spalling. From there we, the Armored Republic, have continued to improve and expand our body armor offerings until the AR500 Armor brand has sold tens of millions of dollars’ worth of Made in America body armor.
We recognize that there is a demand for our steel armor without a coating. Some people prefer the flexibility and low cost of an uncoated armor plate. Others want the potential weight savings of uncoated plates.* Some people are the do-it-yourselfer types. Whatever the reasons, we heard you.
This product includes no spall or frag protection. Our Frag protective coating is also effective and preventing corrosion and rust. This uncoated plate has no protection against rust or corrosion. We encourage you to get the best spall, frag, rust, and corrosion protection available by getting our steel plates with buildup coating.
In the spirit of the company’s foundation and in response to consumer demand, we are now offering our raw Level III steel armor to those who want the same steel armor that our coated Level III plates are comprised of, but without the frag stopping and corrosion preventing coating.
Weight: 8 lbs.
* Our raw plates tend to weigh slightly less than our signature base coat plates, depending on the thickness of the coating being compared with, but it's not usually a significant amount.
