Build, Fight

“Therefore he said to Judah, ‘Let us build these cities and make walls around them, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us, because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.’ So they built and prospered.

And Asa had an army of three hundred thousand from Judah who carried shields and spears, and from Benjamin two hundred and eighty thousand men who carried shields and drew bows; all these were mighty men of valor.”

            2 Chronicles 14:7-8

God made men to work and to keep, to build and to defend what he has built, to the glory of God. This purpose is why you have the right to defend yourself and others from harm. This purpose is also why you have the right to stop those who would unjustly take or damage your property. It goes back to that fundamental calling to build and to fight.

Good men build things worth building. They build families with good order; they build a culture of truth, wisdom, and honor. They join together to build societies of truth and light. Cities on hills. With God’s blessing, these homes and these societies often grow to be the most prosperous and powerful in the world.

But if it’s worth building, evil men know it’s something they must tear down. That’s why good men also build defenses and fight to protect what they have built. Men are fallen; their natural inclination is to destroy what is good. Only the restraining power of good law being enforced by good men is sufficient to halt that destruction. Good men must be ready to fight.
